The Audrey Lynn Mine has a history spanning several decades, marked by the discovery of various gem and mineral species, including aquamarine, spessartine, almandine, and others, through different periods of prospecting and mining. It's named after the daughter of the person who made a significant aquamarine discovery in 1992. If you have any more questions about either Mt. Cahuilla or the Audrey Lynn Mine, feel free to ask!

History and addtional occurrences have been located in California: Ramona District: The area around the Little Three Mine near Ramona was the premier location for fine spessartine for most of the 20th century. Early 1900s: San Diego County was a major gem-producing area, and spessartine was found in pegmatite mines there. The Little Three Mine, discovered in 1903, was the first pegmatite mine in the district. Notable Mines: The Hercules-Spessartite and Spaulding mines were the best sources of spessartine in the Ramona area. Production: From 1956 to 1994, these mines yielded an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 carats of facet-grade spessartine rough. Collector's Gem: While mining still occurs sporadically, significant production has ceased, making California spessartine a prized collector's item. Properties of Spessartine Garnet: Color: Typically ranges from yellow through orange to reddish-brown. The most prized color is a vivid "mandarin" orange. California spessartine is known for its bright orangy yellow to yellowish-orange hues. Hardness: 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for jewelry. Refractive Index: Typically between 1.799 and 1.810. Specific Gravity: Ranges from 4.12 to 4.20. Clarity: Often slightly included, with exceptional clarity being rare, especially from the Little Three Mine area. Common inclusions include wavy two-phase healed fractures and needles/tubes. Chemical Formula: Mn3Al2(SiO4)3, a manganese aluminum silicate. Crystal System: Isometric (cubic). Luster: Vitreous to resinous. Streak: White. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Subconchoidal. Value: The value of spessartine garnet depends on color, cut, clarity, and carat weight. Bright, pure orange ("mandarin") and orange-red hues are the most valuable. California spessartines, especially those with intense colors and good clarity, are highly regarded by collectors due to their historical significance and limited availability. In summary, California, particularly the Ramona district, was a significant historical source of gem-quality spessartine garnet, known for its beautiful orange colors. While no longer a major producing region, these garnets remain valuable to collectors. Spessartine garnet itself is a durable gemstone with a distinctive range of warm colors, making it desirable for jewelry.
